What is a podcasting headset?

At Volubility Podcasting, we tested various headsets over several recording platforms and found there wasn’t a product out there that exactly met the requirements for a high quality recording at an affordable price, so we designed our own, Volubles.
Should I buy a USB or XLR microphone to record my podcast?
Studio-quality audio equipment is great, but it’s expensive and comes with a steep learning curve. Whereas a podcast host might want to invest in a professional recording rig, Volubles headsets are ideal for recording podcast guests. They’re inexpensive, easily shipped, and plug-and-play for those who are not technically inclined. Plus wherever one moves their head, the mic stays perfectly placed near their mouth.
Should I buy a USB microphone to record my podcast?
No. Most inexpensive USB mics have the same problems: they sound muddy, the desktop stands are too short, and they’re still several times more expensive than Volubles headsets. There are certainly studio-quality USB mics available today, but they’re roughly 8-10x more expensive than our headsets. And then you still need to buy headphones. Headsets include both headphones and a mic.
Should I record my podcast with a headset that is single-ear or stereo?
Single-ear headsets like Volubles allow you to hear the person you’re speaking with as well as hear yourself in the space you’re in. With stereo headsets, it can feel like you’re talking in a vacuum which can be disorienting.
