How much should a nonprofit or association plan on investing in podcast production?
If you plan on having an audio-only podcast with episodes under 30-minutes final runtime, we recommend starting with a budget of $14,000-$26,000 for 6-12 episodes in your first year of podcasting.
This includes high quality headsets for hosts and guests, recording, transcription, editing, music, and comprehensive consultation for distribution of the podcast. We have additional detailed information about podcast production pricing available here.
Should we plan podcast seasons for our organization or have an ongoing schedule of every week or every other week?
Podcast seasons are great for regular engagement with your audience, but they aren’t mandatory.
Most of our podcast production clients produce one episode per month, which we’ve found is a manageable cadence for organizations. If you’re able, you can produce 8-10 episodes over a few months and then release them on a regular weekly schedule, but that would require content to not be time-sensive yet cover evergreen topics for your association.
How can we use a podcast to engage our association members?
Invite them to contribute - people love to help shape the conversation. You could include a question-and-answer segment in which you answer one member's question. You can also ask members to share topic ideas or suggest guests for future episodes. In the episode, you can give a hat tip to the member who made the suggestion.
We have a lot of stakeholders—do you have tips for engaging them in our podcast?
You can ask stakeholders to appear on the podcast as a guest to discuss topics relevant to their area of expertise. For example, a partner could talk about an emerging trend that may impact your industry. This can also be a great way to engage your board and super volunteers as well.
Should we do an interview style podcast for our organization or a scripted podcast?
The vast majority of our clients produce interview or roundtable podcasts for quick-turnaround thought leadership content with predictable billing. With that being said, we love producing documentary-style podcasts, weaving together multiple interviews with narration and lots of music.
